Warceremony: Altars of war
26/04/10 || cadenz
Warceremony play thrash-influenced death metal. They hail from northern Finland. This is their first demo. They have some good riffs, but don’t quite know how to make memorable or cohesive songs out of them. They have sucky vocals, especially the clean ones. The drums sound like this. Do you need to know more? Not really, but I’ll give you some anyway.
The general atmosphere is onslaughtish, conjured by in-your-face down-tuned and palm muted Morbid Angel-esque riffs with double kicks, fast thrashy picking, punky d-beats and the odd totally misplaced melodic part (like the chorus on “Terminal Illness”). There is actually some potential here, with several riffs getting my toes tapping and good instrumental execution. Some parts just sound gay as hell and why they sometimes decide to use clean vocals is beyond my comprehension. And why they picked a guy who can’t sing for shit is another mystery. (OK, he’s not that horrible, he’s just bad. (But he still sucks. (But not all that much. (I know, I know, I’ll try to get on with this. (Now.)))))
If Warceremony can get their act together and sort out the better riffs from amongst the garbage, and manage to get some more variety into their songs (they all sound pretty much the same now) they could probably create something worth listening to. “Altars of War” is not bad, but it’s definitely not good either. When you’ve cleaned out the wussy shit from your wanna-be harsh death metal and refined the formula – record a new demo and send it over. Until then…
